付き合ってからだんだん相手の嫌なところが目に付くようになっていつしか顔を合わせれば喧嘩ばかり。そんな絶望的にすれ違うカップルのやりとりが目に浮かぶ失恋ソングです。タイトルの"Mardy Bum"はイギリスの方言で「拗ねる人」という意味で、彼女が融通の利かない子供のように怒りっぽい人であることを表しているようです。そんな一面を見せるようになった彼女に疲弊しきっている様子には同情というよりもはや哀愁を感じてしまいます。
それにしてもこの曲が収められたアルバムを初めて手に取ったのは10年以上前になるのですが、当時は"When the Sun Goes Down"や"I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor"などテンポが速くてアグレッシブな曲ばかりリピートしていたのが、今となってはこの"Mardy Bum"くらいミドルテンポでちょっと切ない曲がちょうどいいと感じるようになってきていて、大人になって性格も音楽の趣味も大人しくなってきた自分に時の流れを感じます。でもこのアルバムはいつまでも色褪せない。アクモンの偉大さを改めて感じますね。
