旧約聖書にある逸話から。ダニエルは王様お気に入りの部下だったが、同僚はそれを妬み彼を貶めようと画策。彼の信仰心の篤さを逆手に取り、神に祈るものはライオンの穴に放り込むという法律を作ることを王様に打診した。王様は騙されたことに気づいたものの法律を変えることはできず、ダニエルをライオンの穴へ落とし、入り口を石で塞いだ。絶体絶命のダニエルだったが、神の加護によってライオンの口が塞がれたため翌朝帰還。王様はダニエルの無事を喜んだとさ。という話。
